Probably 3rd generation soundboard Cincinatti always gets a hard time from people but actually the sound on this version in particular is pretty good. It remains the only full professional Abacab show in circulation, so is a must for that reason alone. [LivingForever] A- because its a full abacab tour soundboard. If it were anything else I would give it a B. Some hissing and a muddy mix. [lasercone77] Actually not quite complete as Carpet Crawlers is lacking - thus the break between Abacab and Me And Sarah Jane ... [kaspergm] Aside from slightly compressed (but stereo) sound and some distortion on the heavy bass pedal parts, this is a good recording with clear instrumentation. This is the best I have heard Phil sing these songs apart from the official Three Sides versions. [pablo] It's probably the not-so-low-generation of the tapes that kicks off the original quality of the recording, but this is a nice show with a pleasurable sound; Dan has done a good job as usual, hardworking on muddy and dead sounding tapes, giving them a new "soft but good" life :-) [Gigio67] I'll give it an A because it's the most complete professional Abacab recording. If there had been other great recordings from this tour this would rate A- at best. [mdekoning] I like this show a lot BUT this easily could be an audience recording. [speedy] This one is for me a must-have - not because of the recording quality, which tends rather towards B+ than A- - but because of the quality of the performance. Possibly the best genesis concert next to the Nassau concert some 8 days later - and the most complete show from this tour! I actually find that the sound can be improved by adding some extra equalization, a bit of compressing and some denoising and dehissing. I know one should be carefull to play too much around with these things so as not too destroy the recording sound - but since it's pretty distorted anyway, there's really not so much to loose. [kaspergm] Well, I'm going to say an "A", basically because there isn't all that much out there to choose from on this tour in terms of full gigs and all that. Obviously the Colisuem and Savoy recordings are better. But, for a complete gig with stories and all, this one is a must for a collector. The soundboard gets some crowd reactions and a bit of a live feel. And, it is not a bad gig at that from the performers. Phil's voice is "jacked" as we say in the states, overreaching certain high notes at points. The lads rip through the "Cinema Show and Slipperman" sections of "In the Cage" with reckless abandon - really awesome playing there. Also, a live "Who Dunnit?" is a treat. That said, the guys really didn't stretch to spice up the live set from the Duke tour all that much; closing with "Dance/Drums/Endos/I Know What I Like" and so on. Also, Phil's seems to have a stretch of perverted stories before 5 tunes in a row which fatten a pretty modest set. but add little to the overall vibe. Still, of the 60 or so gigs on this tour, a good listen. Peace! [jrromman] In my opinion a must have recording of this tour. In terms of sound quality I propose to listen to the Nassau, NY show and to the Cologne-remastered show. Both of them are also must have shows from this tour and have a much better sound quality than this one. [felix.baerenz] A bit too strong on the bass pedals on this recording. Especially during Behind the Lines. Very good version. Not really worthy of an A+ Most parts of the concert sound like they're spliced in from different sources like an aud recording that had a B- quality at best. [legalbeagle] In an attempt to set the record straight, Simon has confirmed that there are no soundboard recordings for this date. They are all audience recordings. [duke23] |
